Heat, humidity, and heavy tree cover are hard on a roof, and Celebration has all three. Live oaks and crape myrtles shade close-set lots, and the warm, damp air under that canopy is what Gloeocapsa magma needs. It is the airborne algae behind the black streaks on roofs here; it grows on the limestone filler in shingles and settles onto tile and metal as well. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association notes that roof algae is most widespread in warm, humid regions. It also warns that high-pressure washing is likely to damage asphalt roofing. We don't use high pressure on any roof, whether shingle, tile, or metal.
On a roof we typically do not rinse the treatment off. The cleaning solution continues breaking down the remaining organic growth after we finish, and Celebration's regular afternoon rain gradually carries the loosened buildup away, so the roof may continue to look cleaner over the following days. On the ground, we pre-wet the landscaping before we start and rinse it again afterward. A soft wash also uses far less water than a pressure washer.
